Of course another early morning at Lake Argyle. Visited the Durack Homestead near the camping grounds. This homestead was build by the first Durack in the late 1800s and when the Ord River system was built in the early 1970s, the homestead was demolished brick by brick and rebuilt above the water line and is now a museum. The house is a typical thick walled residence with wide verandahs, several graves were exhumed and relocated to the homestead site. Watched the finches and the bower bird in the grounds, wandered through the house and tasted some boab tree fruit.
Nice relaxing morning.
Drove back in to Kunnunurra to buy some supplies, including some lunch (at own expense!!)
Then a longer drive to the Purnululu National Park where the Bungle Bungle Ranges are located. Almost all these roads are now sealed and relatively smooth. Luke warned us about the 50 kilometres....we took no notice. The best I could describe them would be as - a roller coaster with rocks. There were so many turns, so many river crossings and washouts. Twenty years ago this 50 kms took 6 hours - we zoom across it in just under two hours - fun times!! I'm sure a back massage would have been welcomed at dusk.
No such luck!!
Got into the camp site at about 5pm, just in time to select out tents, set up our sleeping quarters and help prepare tea.
Beautiful site as the sun went down and shone on the ranges. Very relaxing having a beer around the fire and watching the glow against the Bungle Bungles.

I've also worked out that you guys are behind us in time so when I go looking for your blog, you are not in the same time zone as us! Its amazing me my ability to work things out as this goes along! By my next trip, I'll be a whiz! Again the scenery looks amazing. Lake Argyle looks so blue. It must be hard to leave some of the places, they look so peaceful and beautiful. Still looks like the places you go to are just as spectacular! You are there on our Ekka show day and we went walking up to Mt Cootha Summit - couldn't help comparing what we were looking at to what you are seeing! Not much of a comparison! Love T & G
ReplyDeleteThanks Trish, 2 hours difference doesn't sound a lot but can be significant when we get a text message at 5am!! Good to see you are mastering the computer, great to hear from you all. You'd love this trip, maybe next year for you!!!?? We have seen some amazing scenery, probably almost as good as Mt Cootha? Love Pam and Vernon
