To Fitzroy Crossing

Driving to Fitzroy Crossing today.  Had to clean up the camp, sweeping, mopping and all that stuff.  All aboard, first stop was China Wall at Halls Creek.  This is a geological phenomena caused by molten lave running down a crevice and cooling quickly, it turns into a quartz material, completely different to the surrounding soil, this soil then erodes and leaves the quartz exposed, forming a wall of quartz.  The wall here is called China Wall due to its’ similarity to the Great Wall of China….just a bit smaller.
Speak half an hour in Halls Creek while Luke refuelled the truck, very dry and dusty, good visitors centre (air conditioned too!!) with lots of souvenirs – the girls bought a few samples.  Lunch at Mary Pool then called into the Yiyilli Aboriginal Community where we did an inspection of the school and the Laarri Art Gallery.  We weren’t encouraged to take photos but you can trust me…the paintings done by the community members very beautiful and colourful.  We picked out a few favourites but decided they were a little out of our price range with the really good ones starting at about $2000.  The principle (Nick) has been there for 10 years and is so passionate about the positive aspect of Aboriginal communities and we can see the positive impact he has had on this community.
Left there for Fitzroy Crossing, the biggest caravan park I’ve ever seen, located our camp site, set up our swags then off to the pub for our last tea together.  Nice speeches by all around the table, with a little sadness after we have become such a team over the fortnight.

When we got up the next morning - a wasp and a huntsman spider were battling it out - lucky we didn't see this before we went to bed!!!

  1. Could you imagine living in places like this, you have to be a special breed of person I think. Peace and quiet would be lovely sometimes but all the time - not so sure! Are you tempted to stay? Has it been very hot? We check the weather in Broome when the news is on and the temps seem fairly high, but there wouldn't be any humidity, would there? Love T & G

  2. The weather has been very very good, warm days, about 30 to 35 and the nights down to about 12 - very acceptable, a jumper is needed but only occasionally. Nice place for a holiday but living here would be a challenge, not sure we are up to it, Luke loves it so much but even he would go stir crazy if he was stuck in a place like Halls Creek for a couple of years. Great holiday destination - just don't bring your own car if you want it to stay in one piece - the roads are challenging also. Love Pam and Vernon
