To Cape Leveque

Had a long day today.  Up at 6.00 for showers and pick up at 7.  Drove along the (allegedly) the worst road in WA - Cape Leveque Road - I must say the chiropractors must do a roaring trade after driving this road - corrugations, the Pindan bulldust and washouts - everything rattles and shakes for the 90 kilometres of the dirt section of this road and the red dust goes everywhere.  The 130 kilometres of the sealed section isn't too flash either!!

North to Beagle Bay, a little look around and smoko.  A beautiful church here, made from local product (stone) and decorated with mother-of-pearl shell..
On to Lombadina Djarindjin, another settlement along the coast where the ghost gums are absolutely amazing.  The church there was also made from local product - mainly wood, nobody knows why it hasn't burnt down yet with all the busfires around.  The inside is timber, the roof is corrugated iron with paperbark as insulation, looks like a fire trap to me??!!
Then it was to lunch at Cape Leveque.  The sandstone cliffs and beach were quite photogenic  – really colourful.  We had a couple of hours with Bundy from the Badi tribe to explain the local customs, history and traditions and in particular the bush food available all around the area.   He was very insightful and really was positive about the future of the Aboriginal people in Australia and in particular the cultures in the Kimberley.  I must say his choice of food was not to my palate.
Had a relaxing evening, watching the whales play in the bay as the sun set.  Found a Stimsons python and showed the tourists.  Bar-b-que tea, couple of drinks and slept like babies.
Photos may be an issue with limited coverage...but I'll try.
Back in Broome now so we have photos.
Waiting for the tour to start

  1. Trip sounds good so far and great looking photos. We were at Kingscliff today and it was blowing an absolute gale! We took Dan & Delaney's Italian student to show her how beautiful our beaches were and the sand was blowing everywhere, lots of sunshine however! Hope the rest of your trip goes well - don't forget to take Bundy with you - didn't know you are a rum drinker :) Love Trish

Hope the weather improves for you so you can show off the beautiful beaches over there. Bundy seems happy where he is so I think we'll leave him there!! Be good, Love Pam and Vernon
